For Hawaii, officials braced for 30-centimeter surges—a reminder that when Kamchatka shakes, the whole Pacific pays attention. In reality, things did not turn catastrophic. Minor wave activity—just 60 centimeters—was observed around the Aleutsky District, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center eventually canceled the alerts as the threat faded.

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry leapt into action, and Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov quickly reassured residents that no dangerous tsunami waves reached populated areas. Still, the scare prompted a flurry of safety checks and readiness drills, since people here know tsunamis can be devastating. After all, the 1952 magnitude-9.0 event in Kamchatka flattened villages and sent waves circling the globe.

This time, the damage was minimal. Officials said they had no reports of casualties or significant destruction. Yet, the peninsula’s anxiety wasn’t over—aftershocks rattled nerves, and authorities reminded everyone to stay alert. Small aftershocks are par for the course for days or even weeks after such a large quake.
